We’re all working from home for the foreseeable future, which means Zoom is our new norm for face to face interactions. Here, we’ve rounded up some tips to look your best when on the webcam!
Tip 1: Contrast your background
Whether you’re perched up against a white wall, dark wall, your deep wood headboard, or a virtual background, you’ll want to make sure you’re wearing something that makes you “pop” against it. If you’re against a white or extremely light wall, put on a bold hued color top, or something dark. If you’re against a darker background or wood, go for a lighter color and/or pastel hues. No matter what, though, I’d avoid anything too neutral or skin-toned, like blush pinks or tans as you will end up looking nekkid and getting plenty of confused looks.
In addition, if your background, whether that be your home or a virtual background, is very busy/cluttered/printed, opt for solid color tops. If you’re background is simple, pop with a print! speaking of…
Tip 2: Larger is better when it comes to prints
If you’re wanting to wear a print, go big or (continue to) stay home. Smaller prints can either cause the person on the other side of the screen’s eyes to cross, or it can muddle the colors of the print into something murky. Opt for bold stripes or florals to truly make a statement.
That being said, try to avoid graphic tee shirts that need the whole thing visible to be understood; your counterparts may get distracted, or it may just look messy.
Tip 3: Mind your Shoulders
When it comes to tops on Zoom you want to be aware of what things may look like. Avoid tube tops or strapless items, as the camera might cut off and have you look nekkid again. You’ll also want to avoid straps that are too thin and may not show up on a screen, giving the same effect or lookling like a bra strap.
Tip 4: Mind your layers
Similar with layering for the real world, you want to be cognizant of colors and making sure textures play well together. Forgo the bulky hoodie (unless it’s a trendy tie-dye), and be cautious pairing bulky sweaters over summery blouses or tees. I’d go with a light zip up hoodie or an open cardigan or blazer if you want to up the professional ante.
